Angiogenesis is the formation or growth of new blood vessels. In the most severe form of age-related macular degeneration (known as "wet" ARMD) abnormal angiogenesis occurs under the retina resulting in irreversible loss of vision. The loss of vision is due to scarring of the retina secondary to the bleeding from the new blood vessels. Ocular Nutrition may be useful for the treatment of angiogenesis-dependent diseases like the "wet" form of macular degeneration. As we age, the macula (the small part of the retina at the back of the eye that provides sharpness of vision) begins to break down and produces small white particles called drusen, which are seen in a fundus photograph and in a cross-sectional diagram above. What is macular degeneration? The eye is often compared to a camera. The front of the eye contains a lens that focuses images on the back of the eye.
